Patient Care Technician 2021 intake

A patient care technician is a healthcare technician working under the supervision of a nurse, doctor, or other health professional to administer basic care to patients. This position involves interacting with patients face-to-face and providing assistance with daily tasks. Working as a patient care technician is a position worth considering as it could give you excellent career opportunities in the future.

To become a PCT, Ocean Bird Foundation require you to have 5 o’level pass and complete a basic nurse aide (CNA) training program. After completing PCT training program, or acquiring equivalent work experience, you can then become a certified patient care technician/assistant (CPCT/A) by passing an exam. The job of a patient care technician, or PCT, combines several roles within other health care disciplines, including phlebotomy, nursing, respiratory care and EKG.  PCTs, also called nursing assistants, work in hospitals and medical clinics, doctor’s rooms as well as private homes. Attachment place are provided at lab, surgeries and private clinics. 

Course content: Apart from CNA syllabus, you will be trained in the following; Phlebotomy, Dialysis and EKG/ECG 

Duration: 2 months(if you are not a CNA) or 1 month (if you already a CNA)

Responsibilities

  • Keep patient rooms tidy and sanitized
  • Assist patient with everyday needs (personal hygiene, using the restroom, grooming etc.)
  • Monitor vital signs (temperature, pulse etc.) or EKG signals and patient condition
  • Take fluid samples or other specimens for testing
  • Assist nursing staff in administering basic treatments
  • Perform basic nursing procedures (e.g. changing bandages)
  • Ensure rooms have adequate patient care supplies
  • Assist patients with particular issues or needs
  • Provide appropriate emotional support
